Dilip Kumar is regarded by many as one of the best actors in the history of Indian cinema.
Beginning his career in the 1940s, Dilip Sahab’s filmography spanned several decades and many historic performances.
One of his most famous acts was in Ramesh Sippy’s Shakti (1982), in which he played the unrelenting police officer, Ashwini Kumar.
Shakti is a moving father-son drama, in which Dilip Kumar plays the onscreen father to Amitabh Bachchan.
In the film, Amitabh plays Vijay Kumar, who harbours resentment towards his father.
When Vijay is kidnapped in his childhood, he is devastated when Ashwini refuses to save his life to protect law and order.
Shakti is an immensely popular film even now, but recently, the classic movie sparked a debate on social media.
A user declared that Dilip Sahab took the limelight in the film.
During the days of its production, Amitabh was the industry’s most famous star, while Dilip Sahab had transitioned to mature roles.
In a post, the user wrote on X:
“The real hero of Shakti was never Amitabh Bachchan. It was Dilip Kumar.
“The story belongs to Dilip Kumar’s Ashwini Kumar from beginning to end. The film opens and closes with him.
“What makes Ashwini Kumar extraordinary is that he never abandons his principles.
“This is not the story of a victorious hero.
“It is the story of a man who loses almost everything while remaining true to his values.
“Amitabh Bachchan is magnificent as the wounded son whose childhood trauma shapes his destiny.
“Yet the moral centre, emotional core, and enduring strength of Shakti remain Dilip Kumar.”

Retweeting the post, another netizen favoured Amitabh’s performance and said:
“Dilip Kumar had the larger role, and Amitabh’s one was minor.”

Dilip Sahab and Amitabh were both nominated for the Filmfare ‘Best Actor’ award in 1983 for Shakti.
The former ultimately won the award.
Director Ramesh Sippy said of Amitabh’s performance: “He was underplayed and intense.
“I don’t think anyone else could’ve played the role the way Mr Bachchan did.
“He had to play a hurt and wounded son.”
Shakti also starred Raakhee, Smita Patil, Amrish Puri, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.
It was also one of Anil Kapoor’s first Bollywood films.
Shakti was the first and only film to star Dilip Sahab and Amitabh onscreen together.
On July 7, 2021, Dilip Kumar passed away at the age of 98.
