"No. This is Australia, not India."

An Australian woman has sparked widespread outrage online for criticising Diwali celebrations in Sydney, with many calling her “xenophobic”.

Kobie Thatcher posted the remarks on X, sharing a video of homes in Nirimba Fields, Sydney, decorated with colourful lights to celebrate Diwali.

She wrote: “These houses are not lit up for Christmas. They are lit up for Diwali.

“Just about everyone in this neighbourhood of Nirimba Fields is Indian.

“The West has reached a pivotal moment. We must preserve our own culture before we lose it.”

Her post drew immediate criticism from social media users, many accusing her of xenophobia and intolerance.

In a follow-up post, Thatcher said: “Some Hindus in Australia are now calling for Diwali to become an official public holiday.

“No. This is Australia, not India.

“We will not change our country to mirror the one you chose to leave.”

Her comments quickly went viral, with hundreds condemning her stance as divisive and unrepresentative of modern Australia.

One user responded: “That is the best example of hard-working people accepting Australia as their home and maintaining their culture while accepting the Australian way of life.

“They live peacefully, lawfully and contribute to the local economy. Important thing to remember – Indians celebrate all festivals.”

Another comment read: “So you are against lights and joy when it is shared with the community you claim to live in.”

A third user wrote: “Preserve your culture by embracing diversity, not attacking it.”

Others criticised the rhetoric as rooted in fear and misunderstanding, with one writing:

“This isn’t about preserving culture, it is about fear of the other.”

Another user noted: “Diwali is celebrated by Australians no different to Christmas or Easter lights.”

Several pointed out that multiculturalism is central to Australia’s identity.

One comment read:

“Your idea of ‘Western culture’ is shrinking before your eyes yet you choose anger not understanding.”

Another added: “If Australia is ‘yours’ as you say, then it is inclusive of all its citizens.”

One final commenter summed up the mood: “Lights bring joy, not division, unless you choose to see it that way.”

The controversy has reignited debate over cultural acceptance and the meaning of Australian identity in a multicultural society.
