Actor Eva Grover has opened up about a deeply painful chapter in her personal life involving alleged physical abuse during her marriage.
The actress, known for her roles in Karishma Kaa Karishma, Shararat and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, made the revelations in a candid interview.
She spoke to Siddharth Kannan about her marriage to Hyder Ali Khan, who is Aamir Khan’s stepbrother, and what followed.
Eva revealed that she met Hyder through a mutual friend and the relationship moved at an extraordinarily fast pace from the start.
After dating for just eighteen days, Hyder proposed to her, and the couple decided to take a significant and life-changing step.
Her mother was against the relationship, which led the couple to elope and get married in the year 2000.
Eva claimed that Hyder was living with schizophrenia, a condition she said she was completely unaware of at the time of their marriage.
She alleged that on the third day of their marriage, Hyder physically assaulted her during an intimate moment between them.
She said she was left with bruises and deeply shaken by what had occurred so early into their life together.
Eva further claimed that Hyder became increasingly suspicious over time, often imagining situations that had no basis in reality.
She also alleged that excessive alcohol consumption made his condition significantly worse as their five-year marriage continued.
Despite facing what she described as “a lot of violence” throughout the marriage, Eva said she kept trying to save the relationship.
She held onto hope that things would eventually improve, but the marriage ultimately broke down after the birth of their daughter.
Divorce proceedings were initiated following the birth, and Eva was sent back to live at her mother’s house.
The Shararat actress also claimed that Aamir Khan himself was aware that she was facing serious difficulties within the marriage.
She shared: “I had heard that Aamir sir had said I had not taken the right decision.
“That message had reached me before my marriage through other sources, but I didn’t pay attention.
“Aamir Khan sir didn’t want to have any relationship with this family.”
“When Tahir Abbu was in his last phase, he took him to Pune and kept him there.
“Even my former mother-in-law, whom Tahir Hussain loved, was not allowed to meet him.”
Despite the pain she endured, Eva said she continues to feel genuine sympathy and concern for her former husband today.
She described Hyder’s current circumstances as deeply difficult and said his situation has moved her from a humanitarian standpoint.
Eva Grover said: “Today, Hyder is not in a good condition. He has no house and struggles even for food.
“Sometimes someone lets him stay in a chawl, sometimes a friend helps him.
“I feel sad. Whatever happened, happened, but from a humanitarian point of view, he was once my husband.
“He is surrounded by people who keep giving him alcohol. There is no one to look after him.
“I only pray that whenever his time comes, he finds peace. He has suffered a lot.”
Hyder Ali Khan is Aamir Khan’s stepbrother through his mother Shanaz’s first marriage before she wed filmmaker Tahir Hussain.
