However, they found the filmmaker absent
Ram Gopal Varma is facing legal action after being accused of making defamatory social media posts.
These were against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, his son Nara Lokesh, Lokesh’s wife Brahmani, and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.
The allegations stem from a series of derogatory comments Varma allegedly made during the promotion of his film Vyuham.
Several cases were filed against Varma across Andhra Pradesh, with police issuing a notice for him to appear for questioning.
However, the filmmaker Varma has sought protection from arrest by filing a petition in the High Court.
In his plea, he cited prior commitments to a film shoot and requested more time to comply with the summons.
The High Court dismissed his petition, advising him to either appear before the police or formally request an extension.
Despite these instructions, Varma has reportedly been evading authorities.
On November 25, 2024, police from Maddipadu arrived at his residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, to serve the notice.
However, they found the filmmaker absent, with his phone switched off.
This marked the second time Varma failed to present himself for questioning.
Visuals of the police team at his home have since gone viral, further intensifying public attention on the case.
In a letter sent the day before to Maddipadu police, Varma’s legal counsel explained his inability to appear.
They requested a two-week extension to report to the police station.
The letter also proposed a digital appearance via video conferencing, provided a seven-day notice was given.
The letter emphasised Varma’s right to continue his professional obligations:
“The constitutional liberty of my client’s right to work need not be put to stress needlessly.”
Furthermore, the letter denied the allegations entirely, asserting Varma’s lack of knowledge about the accusations.
The filmmaker’s lawyer said: “I bestow that, my client after going through the FIR states that he has no knowledge of the allegations levelled against him.
He added that Varma deems these allegations “to have ulterior motives”.
Varma’s legal troubles have escalated since November 13, 2024, when he was first served a notice to appear before the police.
His counsel had expressed concerns about a potential arrest during court proceedings, with the judge advising Varma to file for anticipatory bail.
For now, Ram Gopal Varma remains elusive, and his legal team continues to negotiate terms for his compliance.
The controversy has drawn significant public attention, with many awaiting further developments in the case.
