"She had to bite my chin during the song."
Bobby Deol has shared a candid story from the sets of the 1997 thriller Gupt that has left fans thoroughly entertained.
The actor recalled a particularly uncomfortable experience while filming a scene with Manisha Koirala during the shoot of the film.
He shared the anecdote during an appearance on the popular show Aap Ki Adalat, looking back on a specific sequence from the beloved thriller.
The scene in question involved Manisha biting Bobby’s chin during a song, a moment that became far more challenging than anyone on set had anticipated.
The reason had nothing to do with the complexity of the shot or the difficulty of the performance required from either of the actors involved.
It was, in fact, the smell of onions on Manisha Koirala’s breath that made the entire sequence nearly impossible for Bobby to get through.
He explained that the shoot was taking place in cold weather and that someone nearby had been selling chana zor garam at the location.
“Yes, I remember. It was cold when we were shooting, and there was someone selling chana zor garam.
“She was eating it with great pleasure.
“There was a whole scene pending, where she had to bite my chin during the song.”
He went on to describe how the strong smell of onions from the snack had completely derailed his ability to perform the scene with any conviction.
“I was unable to give any expressions due to the smell of onions from her mouth.”
What followed, however, was Bobby’s attempt at a very creative and very youthful act of revenge against his unsuspecting co-star on the same shoot.
He noticed that a scene was coming up inside a college set where Manisha’s brother or a similar character was supposed to come and beat him.
The actor playing that role was relatively new to the industry, and Bobby saw in him the perfect opportunity to settle his scores with Manisha.
“He was a new actor, so I told him to eat onions to improve his acting.”
Bobby made the young actor eat a significant quantity of onions in the hope that the smell would finally get a reaction out of Manisha during her shot.
“I made him eat so many onions, but when he gave the shot, Manisha did not behave any differently.
“You are immature at that age.”
Gupt remains one of the most celebrated thrillers of 1990s Bollywood, remembered for its iconic plot twist and its gripping and stylish execution.
Manisha Koirala’s performance as the villain in the film is widely regarded as one of the most memorable of her remarkable career in Hindi cinema.
On the work front, Bobby Deol is now gearing up for what promises to be one of the most significant phases of his recently revived career.
He will next be seen in Bandar, a film that marks his first collaboration with acclaimed director Anurag Kashyap.
