Talwinder Dhillon is the chairman of Chairman Punjabi Heritage Trust U.K, Shiv Kumar Batalvi Organisation U.K and looks after other heritage trusts related to Punjabi culture. His association with Shiv Kumar Batalvi Organisation in the UK lends him to be the lead on commemorating the life of the unique Punjabi poet and writer, Shiv Kumar Batalvi.

Shiv Kumar Batalvi (1936-1973) left a significant mark on Punjabi literature despite his short life. Born in Bara Pind Lohtian in the Gurdaspur district, his upbringing in rural Punjab deeply influenced his poetic imagery. From a young age, Shiv was drawn to nature and village life, often disappearing for long periods to be by the riverbank. This connection to the natural world, combined with his exposure to local cultural elements like minstrel singers and snake charmers, would later become prominent themes in his poetry.

A pivotal moment in Shiv’s life occurred when he met a young woman named Maina, whose death deeply affected him and inspired much of his poetry centered on separation and grief. Another key influence was his unrequited love for the daughter of writer Gurbaksh Singh Preetlari, which led to one of his most famous poems, “Main ik shikra yaar banaya.”

Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s legacy continued to grow after his death. His poetry collection Alvida was published posthumously in 1974, and his impact on Punjabi literature remains profound. To honour his memory, the Shiv Kumar Batalvi Auditorium was built in Batala, and the “Shiv Kumar Batalvi Award” is presented annually to recognise literary talent. His works continue to inspire future generations, solidifying his place as one of the greatest Punjabi poets of the 20th century.
