Website Angela Forsyth Consulting
This role is a unique opportunity for a qualified teacher who is passionate about working with children with special needs. You will particularly enjoy using your teaching skills in a 1-to-1 setting and will have a variety of classroom experience that will equip you to work collaboratively with a highly skilled team of professionals and also to take the lead in overseeing the academic program set out in a student’s EHC plan.
You will be working with an engaging young teenage boy who is primarily using vocal communication to request and interact with others, occasionally using Proloquo to support communication. He loves being around other people, chatting with others and making others laugh. He especially enjoys slapstick humour and dancing to music – Freddie Mercury is his current hero and he also really enjoys playing games on the iPad and watching funny videos such as Mr Bean.
Being educated in the home setting, the student works with tutors 8:30-3:30 Monday-Friday. As outlined in the student’s EHC plan, the tutors are trained in ABA methodologies and their work is overseen by a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst, a Speech and Language Therapist and an Occupational Therapist. The team work on the targets outlined in the student’s EHC plan, meeting monthly with the whole team to discuss progress and to update targets.
The teacher would be responsible for planning and overseeing the student’s academic targets. He is currently working on basic number skills such as rote counting, number recognition and comparatives such as bigger and smaller. Literacy targets are being supported by a speech and language therapist, using Colourful Semantics and the Nuffield program and the student has a number of work-at tasks to build independence in his work.
The program helps to develop many independent living skills, such as bathing and toothbrushing. The team is using the SOSAFE program to teach about relationships and socio-sexual safety. In addition, the therapists have worked extensively with the student to help manage his behaviour, encouraging him to express his wants, needs, thoughts and feelings. The team employ an exclusively ‘hands off’ approach fostering a safe, caring, environment to enable the student to have autonomy over his day.
