Head of Grants & Trusts

£44,844.80 to £50,000.00 per annum, dependent on knowledge, skills and experience


Job Purpose:

As a senior member of the Development Department, you will build and lead the Grants and
Trusts team in increasing income from statutory and lottery funders, private trusts and
foundations and other grant giving bodies in the UK and internationally; you will establish and
manage strategic relationships with grant-making bodies including Arts Council England and the
National Lottery Heritage Fund, and you will play a pivotal role in delivering the step-change in
development activity and income needed for the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust to achieve its
ambitious vision.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

• Significant fundraising experience, with a track record of soliciting gifts and grants
£50,000 – £1m+ from a broad range of funders, including the National Lottery Heritage
Fund and Arts Council England.

• Experience of developing and delivering plans and strategies, working across teams and
departments, and of budget setting and management.

• Outstanding communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.

• Business acumen and a high degree of financial literacy.

• A skilled team leader, with experience of building and managing high-performing teams.

• In-depth knowledge of the UK’s funding environment as well as the arts, culture, and
heritage sectors.

• Gravitas and presence to be able to inspire and motivate others – internally and

Key Responsibilities

Operational Accountability
• Planning, growing, and leading the Grants and Trusts team in delivering ambitious
fundraising targets, inspiring, and supporting people to achieve them.

• Leading identified and integrated cross-team fundraising campaigns for major projects
and programmes, ensuring a joined-up approach with other areas of fundraising and
communications where appropriate.

• Establishing and maintaining strategic relationships with statutory bodies, lottery funding
distributors, and charitable trusts and foundations.

• Acting as the point of contact internally and externally for grants from statutory bodies
as well as local and national government agencies.

• Ensuring all managed activity is in line with SBT policies and guidelines, and with legal
requirements and sector best practice.

• To lead on the management and reporting of the Trust’s ACE grants, working closely with
colleagues across the organisation.

Financial Responsibility
• Developing and managing the Grants and Trusts annual income and expenditure budget.

• Developing innovative, high-quality funding proposals in support of SBT’s strategic aims.

• Proactively identifying opportunities across the charity to grow grants income and work
with colleagues in developing these into compelling propositions for external funders, as
part of the agreed SBT business plans.

• Ensuring that funders are well stewarded including through timely and informative
reports, meetings, and regular conversations.

• Representing the Development Department on identified Project Boards and cross-departmental working groups.

• Supporting the Trustees, Chief Executive and Director of Development in the cultivation
and stewardship of major grants and trusts prospects.

• Working with the Director of Development to create a scalable staff structure, recruiting,
onboarding, and managing the Grants & Trusts team.

Job Description Agreement

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust retains the right as a condition of your employment to require
