This poem, commissioned by DESIblitz, written and performed by Zarah Alam, is inspired by the TV series \u2018Back in Time for Birmingham\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nSeas swell, Britannia cracks, and its pieces leave a trail
\nWe follow in our hundreds \u2013 pick up, put back, build up.
\nThe Crown is slick with our blood \u2013 mop it up,
\nIgnore the stains on our souls that our children still hold.<\/p>\n

Across the ocean, family seams fray, though the threads cling and catch.
\nIn this tug of war, you long for home, the before, before
\nThe industrial roar of machines, and clangs and bangs, and soul-crushing pounds \u2013
\nA pound of rent a week, for tinned slop and time-bound sleep,<\/p>\n

The paycheque we blink and barely see, the paycheque that visits home more than we do.
\nWake up aching for the life we left behind, the life when the sky wasn\u2019t permanently white,
\nOr soot smeared like the ceiling corner, like the haze we wipe from our eyes
\nWhen walking back in the dead of night, and longing for our wife and child.<\/p>\n

One day<\/em>, we say, one day<\/em>, and day by day, we stay.
\nBecause these freezing streets fill with promise,
\nAnd the tens became the hundreds, and thousands followed.
\nNight shift turns to day shift, the bed is never empty, our heart is never full.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t worry, <\/em>we say, hang on a little longer, make their life that bit better.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nHeard the news? The papers are howling, the ban is swift approaching
\nTelegram calls tanker across ocean lines, live wires, crackling, sparking, call them all in,
\nGuess we bring the spark to Sparkbrook and Sparkhill, our community springs to life
\nFrom spice-filled suitcases, to the welcome hug years in the making.<\/p>\n

Now we can eat, and nothing has ever tasted as good as liver curry
\nOn a cold winter day. Now we can breathe, and so the songs from back home
\nFind us, fill our lungs, and our new homes grow full of the ones that make us whole \u2013
\nWe stitch the ties back tight, no more loose threads.<\/p>\n

With our song, we strengthen our voice, flex our vocal chords,
\nMaking ourselves heard beyond these four walls, we venture to the Bull Ring,
\nTurning up in our finest at the Rag Market and not afraid
\nTo call out, lungs inflated, \u2018Pound, a pound, a pound!\u2019<\/p>\n

Another crackle, static, pixels and then \u2013 moving pictures!
\nThe birth of TV, wheel in our very own that same week.
\nBut then, we hear that guy Powell spouting rivers of blood, our blood runs still,
\n\u2018Stop this flow of coloured immigrants\u2019 he says, God forbid he ever see coloured TV.<\/p>\n

\nAnother decade stretches over the horizon, and we, against all odds,
\nAre coming up in this world \u2013 our name stares out, proudly painted
\nOn the corner shop, looking people in the eye and asking, \u2018do you see us now?\u2019
\nThis is our nai zindagi, naya jeevan. Is there ever a better excuse for some gulab jamun?<\/p>\n

What would you like, angel delight with a pack of cake rusks? We\u2019ve got it all.<\/p>\n

As trousers flare, and collars stretch to our shoulders, the shillings fade out
\nOur pounds roll in, soon we\u2019re rolling the streets of Birmingham in our yellow Allegro \u2013
\nWind in our hair, life shifting gears, unstoppable.<\/p>\n

Who knew that the ole clang of machines would result in these bhangra beats?
\nAnd who needs sleep when we\u2019ve got Independence celebrations and Jubilee parades?
\nSinging \u2018we\u2019re here to stay\u2019, British and Asian, and we think we\u2019ll be okay.
\nAs the Spaghetti Junction adds new strands, we become more and more entwined with this land.<\/p>\n

Until we wake up to the words \u2018NF GO HOME\u2019 and life comes crashing down
\nFrom one spray can. Do they want us or not? We steady our shaking hands,
\nRepaint our dreams, defiant when sinking our roots deeper, pushing through
\nCracked pavements \u2013 our parents never raised us weak.<\/p>\n

\nRoars of the daytimer don\u2019t-tell-your-parents clubs, and echoes
\nOf protests that almost fractured us, but we held strong.
\nThis decade is loud and tie-dye bright.<\/p>\n

Watching our pirated copy of Sholay over a large fish and chips,
\nAnd swapping our saris for ripped jeans, we have become
\nThe both and neither, something new, our very own mix.<\/p>\n

The corner shop thrives, and the pockets of newfound freedoms taste sweet
\nAnd we are just about to put up our feet and watch the telly, when CRASH!
\nLife stops. A brick through the window snaps us out of the dream.<\/p>\n

\nMemories of those early days begin to grow hazy, as our heads fill to the brimful
\nWith Asha on the 45. Hello world, we say, as shaadi.com has us stepping up our game,
\nAnd Kabaddi calls, we stop to watch, and head to the Balti Triangle after the match.<\/p>\n

With a loud \u2018goodness gracious me!\u2019, we creep close to the turn of the century.
\nStaring out of the corner shop windows, the future looks bright \u2013
\nApplications are due soon, always hearing you better be a doctor, not some BA bewakoof.<\/p>\n

\nAll their hopes and prayers live on in us, those of our daadas, daadis, naanas, naanis.
\nThough some of us have lost our tongues, we look to them and know they hear us
\nWhen we say we\u2019re going to be ok, we ignore the wobble in our throat and continue,
\nOur future is bright and brown and that bit better \u2013<\/p>\n
