Actress and model, Sheryln Chopra is set to make her Bollywood debut in Kamasutra 3D. Based on the ancient Indian erotica text, it is a sexual manual in the art of lovemaking. The 3D movie is the first of Bollywood’s new generation of erotica film.
"The world has not been introduced to the 3D erotic genre."
Sheryln Chopra hit headlines recently for being the first Indian woman to pose nude for Playboy. She is now one of eight actors who will go nude for the new erotica, Kamasutra 3D.
Director Rupesh Paul announced the new project at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012, following the premiere of his Hollywood film, Saint Dracula 3D.
Filming for Kamasutra 3D will begin in Mumbai on March 20. All the sex scenes however, are expected to be filmed in Hollywood instead.
Interestingly, Paul is purely looking for international recognition for the film once released. It is thought that Indian censors will not allow the film to be shown across India. The script will be in English and shot using proper stereoscopic 3D cameras. It will be the first of a Kamasutra trilogy, with the second and third film being 4D and 5D respectively.
The synopsis of the film is fairly simple. Based on a young Indian princess, played by Chopra, she sets out on a voyage in search of her husband. Finding herself on a luxurious ship, she undergoes physical and emotional ‘coming of age’. She is then courted by a handsome fellow passenger who introduces her to the art of lovemaking.
Paul has rubbished controversy over his next venture: “Kamasutra is a valued text, as significant as the Gita or Ramayana, among the sacred texts of India. It is very pathetic to associate the name with porn every now and then.”
“Quite contrary to popular wisdom, Kamasutra was not written all alone by Vatsyayana, but by a range of authors, across centuries. Therefore, the script of Kamasutra 3D has incorporated the configuration of this sacred text, through centuries and in various historical contexts.”
“3D appears the best format to portray classic erotica, but it was hardly experimented till recently. It had remained as a tool to give the biggest jolt in horror movies. Nobody predicted that the Chinese stereoscopic porn would be a major hit. In fact, it out grossed 3D film Avatar. In the film, we are trying to give an extra dimension to the sexual positions described in the ancient treatise on the art of love.”
“Yet, there wouldn’t be any compromises made in the movie regarding creative nudity or boldness, to appease the moral police.”
Paul also recently confirmed that Chopra will also perform an item song for the film: “Yes, we do have an item number in the film, which will also be used as the promotional song,” he said.
“The song will be…on Sherlyn. We will start shooting for the song soon. We might shoot for the song towards the end of the film.”
Here is a teaser from the film. Please be warned this clip is not suitable for minors:
Searching for a full and willing cast was difficult in the run up to the film, Paul admitted: “I got mixed reactions from the actors whom I approached. While a few of them gave me a cold shoulder, branding my film as graphic porn, others appreciated the bold idea.”
Paul believes however, that Chopra is a perfect lead. The film is expected to be Chopra’s big break as a viable leading actress. She has only played minor roles in Bollywood to date. She notably starred in Game (2007), Time Pass (2005) and Red Swastik (2007). More recently, she had a minor role in Dil Bole Hadippa! (2009).
It was only after she appeared completely naked in Playboy, that she hit the headlines. Unruffled by all the criticism she received about the shoot, Chopra said:
“It was really too good to be true! The entire environment was so exciting and liberating and full of creative energies. The staff, the girls, the photo shoot team and above all the ultimate Playboy, Mr Hefner, were all very kind and affectionate.”
She was almost dropped from Kamasutra 3D, after posting up confidential film video and stills of her character.
Later she apologised to the producers: “In hindsight, I agree that prudence should always precede passion. Henceforth, I won’t do anything just out of passion, but also with due diligence, keeping the best interests of everyone at heart. I’m looking forward to shooting the movie, an adaptation of one of India’s most ancient manuscripts.”
No doubt the 3D film will be an expensive one to shoot. Executive Producer of the film, Sagar Thackar announced:
“The budget of Kamasutra 3D is around Rs.5 crore to 7 crore. Obviously, a lot of extra effort is put in for 3D films, but it’s worth it. Ideally when you plan to make a 3D, you need an extra Rs.1.5 to 2 crore.”
“The film will certainly be a trendsetter. The world has not been introduced to the 3D erotic genre,” he said.
With the short teaser of the film has already released showing Sherlyn with her bare breasts and oozing sensuality, viewers can already guess what to expect from the full feature.
